Appeal for Justice for Maria Ressa
Twelve Nobel laureates signed a letter, drafted by Mary Wald, appealing to Philippines President Marcos for justice for Nobel laureate Maria Ressa, who was facing persecution on false charges in an effort to silence her. dIt particularly addressed an upcoming trial for tax evasion which could have shut down Maria’s online news site, Rappler, which had been critical of the previous Duterte administration.
The letter was posted in The Democracy Report and was covered by the New York Times.
Dmitri Muratov, Maria’s fellow 2021 Nobel laureate, also taped a video for the appeal.
Maria was acquitted of the charged.
